内容記述 The aim of this brief paper is to examine the lexical influences of Japanese on English from several perspectives, in order to lay the groundwork for a forthcoming essay on the history of such words and their status in contemporary English. After summarizing work done in this field so far, and commenting on the dating of first entry of words into English, it proceeds to offer a typology of borrowing, based on etymological derivation and new word-formation. Finally, it assesses degrees of assimilation, with particular reference to current English lexicography, and looks at recent data analysis of newly imported words which points to a relatively high percentage for Japanese. "b<a" means "b is derived from a"; "x>y" means "x is the source of y".
